Cognitive Behavioral Health Coaching
for Anxiety Management

Course Description
This 12-hour advanced training equips NBHWC-certified coaches to support clients experiencing generalized anxiety, panic, and stress-related conditions. Coaches will explore the psychological and physiological mechanisms of anxiety and learn CBT-informed coaching tools to help clients manage avoidance behaviors, reduce anxious thought patterns, expand valued living, and build emotional resilience, while distinguishing cases appropriate for coaching versus those requiring referral.
Target Audience:
The target audience is National Board Certified Health & Wellness Coaches (NBC-HWCs) seeking to fulfill their 36-hour continuing education requirement, specifically through courses that foster more understanding on how they can support clients on cognitive behavioral skills for those experiencing generalized anxiety, panic, and stress-related conditions while remaining within their scope of practice.

Learning Objectives:

- Understand common anxiety disorders and contributing factors
- Recognize patterns of avoidance, hypervigilance, and somatic symptoms
- Apply CBT tools for behavior change, reappraisal, and increasing life engagement
- Coach clients experiencing worry, panic, or social anxiety
- Identify scope limitations and appropriate referrals

Module 1: Anxiety Background (1 hr)
- Overview of anxiety versus fear
- Understand anxiety as an adaptive survival response
- Summarize prevalence patterns
- Summarize physical and societal impact of anxiety disorders
Module 2: Anxiety and Related Diagnoses (2 hrs)
- Describe diagnostic framework related to anxiety disorders
- Recognize core clinical features for anxiety and related disorders to inform observation and referral
- Differentiate the various anxiety related disorders
- Identify common screeners and their role in assessment and informing referral
Module 3: Etiology & Mechanisms of Anxiety (3 hrs)
- Outline the brain’s alarm system related to threat and anxiety
- Describe anxiety as a threat sensitivity concern
- Review conditioning principles contributing to the development of anxiety presentations
- Outline common safety behaviors and forms of avoidance and how they worsen anxiety
Module 4: Treatment Approaches (3 hrs)
- Describe exposure-based approaches
- Differentiate types of exposure
- Review cognitive strategies for anxiety
- Match treatment approaches to anxiety etiology
- Distinguish treatment approaches within coaching scope versus requiring referral
- Review common anxiety medications
Module 5: Scope of Coaching for Anxiety (3 hrs)
- Distinguish cases appropriate for coaches versus requiring referral
- Apply treatment mechanisms to coaching-appropriate support for clients
- Visit full case presentations to illustrate assessment and support in coaching frame

Instructional Format:
- Pre-recorded Lectures/Webinars:
- Video Content: Instructors record lectures, presentations, or demonstrations that learners can watch at their convenience. Including slides, visual aids, and sometimes demonstrations of coaching techniques.
- Narrated PowerPoints: Similar to video lectures, these are often PowerPoint presentations with synchronized audio narration by the instructor.
- Reading Materials:
- Case Studies: Written scenarios that describe client situations, allowing learners to apply theoretical knowledge to practical coaching challenges.
Program Assessment Criteria
To successfully complete the program and demonstrate mastery in an asynchronous learning environment, participants will be evaluated on the following:
- Completion of all modules: All assigned course modules and associated learning activities must be fully completed.
- Successful completion of the final quiz (requiring a score of 80% or higher): A comprehensive final assessment will measure understanding of core concepts and program content, requiring a minimum passing score of 80%.
