Depression and Disability
At Toivoa, we aim to support a wide range of different disorders, which we refer to as the octuple aim. We will train NBHWC-certified coaches through Toivoa Coaching and hire them in partnership to deliver care across the eight different disorders we focus on with our Cognitive Behavior Therapy: Eating Disorders, Opioid Abuse Disorder, Substance Abuse Disorder, Sleep Disorders, Smoking Cessation, Chronic Pain, Depression, and Anxiety. We aim to enhance the inclusion of those diagnosed with these 8 disorders and the health inequities that these people face daily because of their health status.
With depression being one of the most common mental health illnesses, we recognize the unique emotional, mental, and physical challenges faced by individuals with disabilities. Depression is one of the most serious issues, affecting an estimated 17.4 million (32.9%) adults with disabilities who experience frequent mental distress. This highlights the need for targeted support.
Depression in this community often stems from a combination of factors, such as mobility issues or financial issues. These mobility challenges lead to limited independence, which results in feelings of isolation, frustration, and low self-esteem. This can lead to difficulties in finding a job or making a living, causing financial struggles that can be difficult to handle.
Social Barriers:
Beyond physical barriers, people with disabilities often encounter social prejudices and misunderstandings. Negative attitudes and a lack of awareness about disability can limit opportunities for employment, healthcare access, and meaningful social connections. This exclusion frequently leads to social isolation, which is a major risk factor for developing depression.
Healthcare Challenges:
Those struggling with disabilities had a difficult time gaining access to appropriate, comprehensive healthcare and are often limited by transportation, financial constraints, or provider knowledge gaps.
However, depression is treatable. At Toivoa, we offer an inclusive, comprehensive approach that includes:
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
- Personal Coaches
- Goal Setting
- Easy Accessibility to the Program
Our approach at Toivoa is to make Cognitive Behavior Therapy extremely accessible with just a mobile device. Our coaches can help you thrive and attain knowledge by setting personal goals using our app, within the comfort of your own home.
